Annual Public Meeting and VA-L AGM
On Thursday 19 November, from 9.15am to 12.30pm, VA-L and Leeds Voice are holding a joint Annual Public Meeting at Wheeler Hall (adjacent to Leeds Cathedral and The Light). The Public Meeting will be followed by a networking lunch and then at 1.30pm the VA-L Annual General Meeting. More details can be found on the flyer and

At the AGM, a special resolution is being proposed to amend VA-L's current Memorandum and Articles of Association - more details at www.val.org.uk.

Christmas is traditionally a popular time for people to volunteer, so if your organisation is looking for volunteers, register with the Volunteer Centre as we may be able to help.

The Autumn/Winter 2009-2010 edition of VA-L's training directory “Training Matters” with details of all our training courses up to the end of January is on our website. Community Centre Energy Support
Bradford Environmental Action Trust (BEAT) has recently launched a new programme of free support for Community Centres across West Yorkshire and the South Pennines. BEAT will be holding several events across the region to demonstrate practical ways of saving energy, and help community centres understand and manage their energy and water use. PERS - Basis 2 Supporting West Yorkshire VCS
The Pay and Employment Rights Service (PERS) has received BASIS 2 funding to provide additional support to VCS groups across West Yorkshire. The aim of the project is to provide high quality, professional HR services for groups/organisations who do not have in-house HR specialists. PERS also provides training courses on aspects of the law and good practice with regard to rights and responsibilities at work. More information at www.pers.org.uk

RISS – Connecting Rural Communities
The Rural Infrastructure Support System (RISS) service is being funded by the Big Lottery Fund and will work with the rural Voluntary and Community Sector in West Yorkshire and offer support and guidance to help build a stronger and more sustainable sector. The project will also work on behalf of the sector to make sure the people and organisations making decisions write plans that take into account rural West Yorkshire. Charity Commission New Model Constitution
The Charity Commission has published a simplified model constitution for charities below the registration threshold. The 700-word constitution is aimed at charities that don't own any property or employ any staff and expect their annual income to remain below the £5,000 threshold for registering with the Commission. Emmandjay Charitable Trust
The Emmandjay Charitable Trust was set up in 1962 for a 50-year period, which comes to an end in 2012. For most of last year the trustees were in consultation with the Charity Commission to obtain agreement for their wishes for the eventual winding up of the trust. To this end, the trustees have decided to donate a major part of the remaining funds and capital of the trust to a project helping older people with housing and care; additionally it has made large donations to cancer research activities mainly in Leeds. European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
Yorkshire Forward has created the Third Sector ERDF Access Fund, offering grants of between £2,000 and £10,000. This will be delivered locally throughout the county by the Yorkshire Community Foundations, and will help Third Sector organisations prepare themselves to make bids for larger sums from the ERDF. Hardship Fund
The first grant offers from the government's Hardship Fund have been made to 74 voluntary organisations across the country, ranging from £50,000 to £250,000. The fund is still open for applications. More details at www.cdf.org.uk
