Newsletter Evaluation

Annual Public Meeting and AGM
On Thursday 19 November VA-L and Leeds Voice are holding a joint Annual Public Meeting, with the theme 'Working Together'. You are welcome to attend this meeting which will be held at Wheeler Hall (adjacent to Leeds Cathedral and The Light). This will be followed by a networking lunch and the VA-L AGM. Connect Leeds
VA-L and Leeds Voice are producing a new joint database for the third sector organisations that we work with in Leeds - “Connect Leeds”. In the next few weeks VA-L and Voice will be sending out a data collection questionnaire to all the organisations that we work with, focusing on your organisation and its activities. Breast Buddies
Earlier this year, Breast Buddies community group worked with the Young Parents group in Leeds to produce a magazine written by and for young parents. The magazine also aimed to promote breastfeeding to this peer group. They still have a number of copies of the magazine left and are willing to distribute them to organisations that would be able to make use of them. Browning House
Browning House is a Chapeltown-based charity which aims to ensure the protection and safety of children by offering parents a role model and training, to enable them to care themselves for their children within the community. It will be holding its first conference, “Decision Making: Right for Children - Fair to Parents?”, on 27 October at The Met Hotel, Leeds. CHANGE
CHANGE (a leading national equal rights organisation led by disabled people) is beginning a research project into pregnancy and maternity services. They are looking for research participants (women with a learning disability who are pregnant or who have just given birth). Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network (LASSN)
LASSN has joined forces with the two universities and also with Amnesty International to put on a national conference in Leeds on 29 January 2010 (see Events section below). Governance Framework – Voluntary, Community and Faith Sector Funding
A Framework to support Leeds City Council’s funding relationship with the Voluntary, Community and Faith Sector (VCFS) is now available. Invite for Submission of Expressions of Interest for the South Leeds Sports Centre
Leeds City Council would like to invite expressions of interest from parties interested in taking a lease for the South Leeds Sports Centre, Beeston Road, Leeds, LS11 6TP. Although the Council will no longer provide services from this site from June 2010, it would like to offer the building for use by the local community. Next Steps for the Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
The Cabinet Office and Charity Commission have produced a joint response to the consultation on the Charitable Incorporated Organisation. It is hoped that the new legal form will be introduced by spring 2010. Full details at www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk

NJC Scales 2009-10
Final agreement has been reached for the NJC pay scales 2009-10. In general, they represent a 1% increase, but there is a higher increase for some of the lower scale points. Visit www.navca.org.uk

“Rain Tax”
The government says it will intervene after churches and charities campaigned against the so-called "rain tax". BBC story at www.bbc.co.uk

Revised Model Mem and Arts for Charitable Companies
The Charity Commission has revised the model Memorandum and Articles of Association for charitable companies. The model document is for use by new applicants wishing to become charitable companies; existing charitable companies do not need to reformat their current governing documents. Visit www.charitycommission.gov.uk. To accompany the new model document, the Commission has produced a Question and Answers pack on "Incorporating an existing charity as a company".

BT Community Connections
BT Community Connections is an award scheme which enables community and charitable organisations to get online. Groups can apply for a laptop and a year’s free broadband connection. Common Ground Initiative
The Common Ground Initiative, a new £20 million fund to support African development through UK based small and diaspora organisations, aims to make grants totalling over £20 million over three years. Current information available about the fund at www.dfid.gov.uk

Grassroots Grants
Unfortunately, due to high demand, Leeds Community Foundation’s Grassroots Grants programme is no longer accepting applications. The next deadline will be in March 2010. However, for the second year running, the Foundation is running a Cash Giveaway with the Yorkshire Evening Post. Grants of up to £900 are available for community groups with an income of under £30,000 a year. More details at www.leedscommunityfoundation.org.uk

Luncheon Club Annual Grant (Leeds City Council)
Applications can be made from any independent community group wishing to provide a luncheon club on a regular basis for older people in the city of Leeds. West Yorkshire Grants 2010-11
